NFC is the only organization in India which caters to the fuel requirements of nuclear power reactors. It has three units in Hyderabad, Pazhayakayal and Kota. Nuclear Fuel Complex was conceived in late 60’s as a pivotal industrial arm of the Department of Atomic Energy with the mandate to fuel the nuclear power program of Govt. of India.

The inaugural organizational meeting of IIM was held on 24th February 1946, leading to its official inauguration on 29th December 1947 at the Royal Asiatic Society Hall, Calcutta. The event was graced by Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the then Minister for Industry and Supply. Sri Jahangir J. Gandhy served as the first President, and Dr. Dara P. Antia was appointed as the first Honorary Secretary of the Institute.
Since its inception, IIM has grown remarkably, with a membership now exceeding 10,000 members and continuing to expand. The Institute has established chapters in most major cities and industrial centres across India, upholding the highest professional standards.
Over the decades, IIM has evolved into a distinguished institution globally recognized for its leadership in metallurgy and materials science. Also, NFC has expertise in production of speciality tubes, high purity special materials.
